Association For The Help of Retarded Children - Plainview

The Nassau Chapter of AHRP has approximately 100 families of participants who cannot afford to purchase food items for Thanksgiving.  Please help by donating turkeys and turkey gift certificates, bagged stuffing, canned peas & beans, gravy, yams, etc.

Coats (all sizes) may be dropped off at many locations until December 15th.  Volunteers also needed to pick up bags of coats from schools and deliver them to cleaners.

Annual Toy Drive collects new, unwrapped toys (or cash donations to purchase toys) for distribution to families designated to the Youth & Family Counseling Agency of Oyster Bay-East Norwich.  Volunteer help needed to sort & pack at First Presbyterian Church in Oyster Bay December 19 & 20 from 9-2.

This UJA-Federation and United Way agency provides service to those in need island-wide.  Their Adopt-A-Family program welcomes families volunteering to help provide basic necessities to needy individuals and families.  Please donate food and toy (for ages 10-16) for the holidays.

LICC operates food pantries where donations of non-perishable food are always needed.  New and gently used clean warm clothes of all sizes and varieties such as jackets, sweatsuits, socks, hats, gloves are greatly appreciate.  The Annual Migrant Free Dinner will be held November 21 at Junior HS.  Volunteers can just show up to help at 1:30.  For donations of food from Nassau County call Hugh.

Diaper donations and other baby/child items are welcome for this social service which tends to the needs of homeless women and their children.  MHS has shelters in Riverhead, East Northport and Deer Park as well as a mother-baby program in Babylon.  Additional donation suggestions include loves, socks, scarves, night shirts and exercise videos for teens or women, games & toys and Disney type VCR movies for the waiting room at the family service clinic and mother-baby homes.

Toy Distribution Program provides gifts and toys to over 1,500 children and teens.  Schools, businesses, individuals participate by donating gifts and by volunteering to sort, package and deliver the toys.  Holiday party for Foster Children on December 27 at the Marriott, Uniondale needs volunteers to sort and wrap gifts and to welcome the guests. Adopt A Family Program needs volunteers as well.

The shelter welcomes volunteer collection and donation of cans an (unopened 5 & 10 lb.) bags of dog and cat food.  Biscuits and treats also appreciated.  These are distributed to senior citizens so that their furry companions do not go hungry during the holidays when money is tight.  You can bring the goodies Nov. 20 - Dec. 20 to the shelter at 51 Lamar Street M-F 8am to 3pm; Sat 10am-2:30pm.

* Check your local churches & synagogues to see if they have holiday food sharing programs and need volunteers.

*  Take warm, gently used clothing including coats, hats, gloves, scarves to a homeless shelter or parish outreach.

*  Make sandwiches for local soup kitchen.

*  Arrange to visit residents of a nursing home, veterans hospital, local hospital.

*  Give blood!  Call Long Island Blood Services 631-927-5000 for locations and schedules.

*  Resolve to make an on-going volunteer commitment in the new year.  (Check the Long Island Volunteer Center website www.longislandvolunteercenter.org for suggestions).

Reminder: Most of the volunteer events are open to the general public, so these are NOT "singles only" opportunities.  It is important to wear your SFC pins so that our SFC buddies and other singles can find each other at a volunteer event.
